Main Idea & Theme
Main Idea:
The main idea of a paragraph is the author's message about the topic. It is often expressed directly or it can be implied.Finding the main idea is key to understanding what you read. The main idea ties all of the sentences in the paragraph or article together. Once you identify the main idea, everything else in the reading should click into place.
Theme:
The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what critical belief about life is the author trying to convey? Themes are ideas that not only apply to the specific characters and events of a book or play, but also express broader truths about human experience that readers can apply to their own lives.
