Summary

 How To Write A Summary

Writing a good summary is not as easy as it may appear. It actually requires quite a bit of finesse. These are the three main steps to writing a summary:

1. First you must read and understand the text. This may involve decoding challenging vocabulary, and re-reading to make sure you understand what is going on.

2.Then you must identify main ideas and key points, which means that you must have a good enough understanding of the text to distinguish between essential and nonessential information.

3.Finally you must express this information in your own words. This means that summarizing a text requires both comprehension and expression.

Please play the video below for some extra tips on how to summarize.

Fiction Summary Assignment:

Please click on the video below to watch Kelly Shoemaker read the book: Mr. Peabody's Apples Once you have listened to the read aloud find a parent/guardian, sibling or someone in you house and orally tell them what the story was about. If there is no one around practice summarizing orally out loud to yourself. Remember summaries should be shorter than the text, it takes Ms. Shoemaker about 10 minutes to read the book, it should take you a lot less time to orally summarize. Don't forget to include the setting, characters, problems and solutions in your summary. Make sure you tell about events from the beginning, middle and end also.

Nonfiction Summary

Writing a nonfiction summary is a little different from writing a fiction summary.
